GRADUATION PROJECT

Out of Touch X FASHIONCLASH

Out of Touch is a project that was supervised by FASHIONCLASH, an interdisciplinary showcase & development platform for emerging designers and artists in fashion and fashion culture.

What if we could use our sense of touch to explore and connect with clothing in a new way? Out of Touch is a fashion project that invites you to rediscover your connection with clothing. Fashion is more than just a product; it’s a powerful means of self-expression and connection.

-The Wall Exhibition

‘The Wall’ is a multimedia installation that invited visitors to discover fashion in a new and tactile way. ‘The Wall’ was the outcome of the interactive workshop series ‘Out of Touch: The Wearable Wall of Fashion.’

The exhibition took place from 25-27 May at Centre Céramique (3rd floor) in Maastricht.

-The Wearable Wall of Fashion Workshop

The WEARABLE WALL OF FASHION Workshop was a playful and sensory experience that challenged how we engaged with clothing. Since fashion is a collaborative process, Zoé invited workshop participants to collaborate and share their thoughts and reflections on fashion and clothing during interviews. By removing the participants’ sight and leaving only their sense of touch, participants experienced a unique connection with the material aspect of fashion. This experience helped them see fashion as more than just a product but also a connector of people.

The exhibition reveals the journey and artistic process behind « The Wall » (2023). An immersive space where fashion transcends its conventional boundaries, transforming into a powerful means of self-expression and connection. Before the culmination of this multimedia installation, two dynamic and interactive workshops known as « The Wearable Wall of Fashion” took place. These workshops catalyzed the creation of the experimental installation and videos of « The Wall. » In these workshops, participants embraced the exploration of touch, allowing their senses to curate outfits that defy the norms. These individual choices were immortalized through photography, capturing the essence of their original ensembles. The workshops extended beyond mere styling. Interviews became pivotal in the artistic journey, capturing each participant’s diverse perspectives and creative processes. Central to the exhibition is « The Fitting Room, » a sensory installation meticulously crafted in collaboration with workshop participants. Constructed from discarded and forgotten clothing, it serves as a testament to the collaborative nature of fashion and symbolizes its material manifestation. As you explore the exhibition, immerse yourself further by listening to the interviews with workshop participants, allowing their voices to resonate within you. The experimental video translates touch into a visual language where the boundaries of perception dissolve. “The Wall” is a visual and physical testimony to the original nature of fashion as a collective process, with each visitor embodying the essence of its meaning. Explore the space between the material and immaterial aspects of fashion.

-The Wall Video Interviews

Directed, filmed, and edited by Zoé Berteloot

Enter the participants’ journey through the video interviews presented in the exhibition « The Wall. » Filmed at the beginning and the end of the two workshops. The video interviews serve as compelling documentation of the participant’s experience. These videos reveal their personal stories and the subtle shifts in their perspectives. The interviews offer an intimate look into participants’ thoughts and processes, uncovering their vulnerabilities, inspirations, and moments of discovery. By immersing yourself in these videos, you will gain a deep understanding of their individual experiences. You are an observer and a participant in their process of transformation. You are invited to empathize, reflect, and perhaps resonate with their stories. The participants’ voices echo in the exhibition space through their candid revelations, creating a rich tapestry of human experiences connected by the fashion thread.

-The Wall The Fitting Room

By Zoé Berteloot, in collaboration with Laura Claessens

“The Fitting Room” was a sensory installation made of discarded clothing. Throughout their artistic journey during the workshop, the participants collaborated on creating « The Fitting Room. »

After washing their hands and taking off their shoes, visitors were invited to enter the fitting room. Smell and touch the clothes used to make the wall. The video interviews with workshop participants provided insights into their creative process and diverse perspectives on fashion.

-The Wall Experimental Video

Directed by Zoé Berteloot, Filmed and edited by Vince van de Poel

Complementing the installation and video interviews, an experimental video translates the sensory experiences of the workshop participants into a new form. It aims to bridge the gap between the tangible and the intangible, the material and the intangible, by offering a visual translation of the transformative power of touch and its deep connection to self-expression and creativity. The video is a medium to translate and amplify the tactile experience.
